Architecture of Eton

Posted on 31 July 2019 by Admin under Uncategorized

Being located in Eton we are very fortunate to be surrounded by some incredible architecture, we certainly make the most out of our surroundings by using them to shape and bring the character of Eton into our portraits.

Eton College is an outstanding group of buildings surrounding 2 courtyards. Mainly red brick with stone dressing

Eton College was founded in 1440 by Henry VI, who founded King’s College, Cambridge in 1441 and subsequently linked the school to King’s in order to supply college scholars. Eton College chapel was begun in 1441.

Following Henry’s deposition in 1461, the college’s income was much reduced, and building work stopped altogether until the later 1460s. The majority of the ranges surrounding School Yard and Cloister Court were finished by 1500.

Eton College Chapel

Eton College Chapel is the main chapel of Eton College, an independent school in the United Kingdom.

The fan vaulting was installed in the 1950s after the wooden roof (there was no money for a vault to be installed in the 15th century after King Henry VI was deposed) became infested with deathwatch beetles. It was completed in three years and is made of concrete, faced with stone, supported by steel trusses, with hand-carved Clipsham stone for the stone ribs supporting each bay.

The chapel was planned to be a little over double its actual length, but this plan was never completed owing to the downfall of the founder Henry VI. A plaque on a building opposite the west end marks the point to which it should have reached. The Chapel is built in the late Gothicor Perpendicular style.

Henry VI used Winchester College as the model for his new school. He brought the Headmaster of Winchester, William Waynflete, to Eton, along with several students, to start the Eton school. The king appointed a board of ‘feoffees’ to administer the school, drawn from members of the royal household, the church, and nobility.

The king intended the school buildings to unrivalled in Europe; the chapel was designed to extend for 18 bays, with the longest nave in Britain or on the Continent. He also obtained religious relics, including a piece of the True Cross.

Unfortunately, when Edward IV came to the throne in 1461 he took away many of Eton’s grants and transferred the school’s treasures to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Construction on the school chapel stopped at just 8 bays, which is still quite impressive, though not nearly what Henry VI had in mind!

William Waynflete, who also founded Magdalen College in Oxford, added an ante-chapel to complete the building, which must stand as one of the best examples of Perpendicular style in England. Waynflete was responsible for the wall paintings in the chapel, and for building the north range that encloses School Yard, the heart of the College.

Today the Chapel services retain their important position in the life of the college: boys attend once on Sundays and at a number of other voluntary services throughout the week. The number of boys in the school so expanded that a second church, Lower Chapel, was built in 1890.

School Yard

The stone of the chapel and the red brick of Lupton’s Gateway make a brave contrast on a sunny morning. The former was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, five years before he laid the first stone of the chapel of King’s, Cambridge, which Eton’s chapel much resembles.

In 1700 the present roof, of wood, was put on, and in 1848-60 extensive restoration took place. The whole structure is 175 feet long and 82 feet high. Provost Lupton’s Tower is early sixteenth century, but two bell turrets were added in 1764.

Photograph of the Schoolyard at Eton College with Lupton’s Tower in the background. To the left of the centre and surrounded by a low metal railing stands the bronze statue of the founder of the college, King Henry VI who wears Garter robes.

The School yard at Eton was begun during the 15th century and following gradual architectural additions, was completed during the late 17th century. In the centre stands Lupton’s Tower, built by Henry Redman in 1520 and named after Roger Lupton, who was Provost of Eton College from 1504-35. The statue of King Henry VI was designed by Francis Bird and was erected in 1719.

College Library

The building is a memorial to the Eton boys who took part in the war in South Africa.

The architects aimed to produce a ‘dignified’ plan layout on an irregular site. The school hall is approached from the street via the main doorway, leading through a low-vaulted entrance hall. It seats 1,100 people with walls of Portland stone (as are the Ionic columns dividing the space.)

Eton famously has multiple library collections of national importance, including the renowned College Library, as well as many notable buildings, but the main School Library, containing books and CDs as well as an up-to-date network of computers, is housed in a memorable late-Edwardian building, opposite the chapel, designed by L. K. Hall (an Old Etonian) and completed in 1905–8, as a memorial to Old Etonians who had died in the Boer War. It contains some 40,000 books.

College Library is a rare book and manuscript library of international importance. Established soon after the foundation of Eton College, it houses more than 150,000 items, ranging from the 9th to 21st centuries. These include printed and manuscript volumes, literary manuscripts, autograph letters, and prints and drawings.

In the 1960s the college began also collecting rare books and manuscripts from the 19th century onwards. The modern collection includes important holdings of English literature and is also rich in travel writing, theatrical history and fine printing. College Library also has responsibility for the Macnaghten Library of First World War materials, presented to Eton as a memorial in 1938.

The Combined Cadet Force

Posted on 11 June 2019 by Admin under Photography for Eton College, Uncategorized

The Eton College CCF was founded in 1860 as the Eton College Rifle Corps at a time when it was thought that Napoleon III was threatening to invade Britain. It was the first continuous school corps of its kind.

It is always an honour to be asked to cover this amazing event.

Boys can join the corps from D block upwards. The aim of the corps is to provide boys with a wide range of military skills, adventurous pursuits, leadership experience and the opportunity to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award at silver level.

The corps is commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Michael Wilcockson (a master at the school) who is assisted by an Adjutant and two permanent CCF staff, both of whom have been regular soldiers.

There are several masters who are commissioned officers, as well as regular Army officers and NCOs who often assist with training. The corps has its own purpose-built building, the ‘Orderly Room’, which houses its stores, offices, mess and training rooms.

Boys may choose to be members of the Army or the RAF sections but most of the training is the same for both sections. Training moves rapidly through drill, weapon-training, battle skills, signals, shooting, leadership exercises, and a range of adventurous training activities. In every half there is a weekend exercise or ‘corps scheme’ when training is much more intense, demanding and wide-ranging.

In the summer half there is a range weekend when live ammunition is fired. In addition to basic infantry training, members of the RAF section have the opportunity to fly in the Tutor aircraft at RAF Benson and glide in the Vigilant at Dalton Barracks.

More senior boys specialise in military and survival skills and prepare as cadet instructors through a cadre course.

The highlight of the year is the annual tattoo for which boys prepare during the first part of the summer half and perform on the evening before the ‘Fourth of June’. To an audience of over 800 people the corps parades and presents its colours, demonstrates a range of activities from precision drill to a light gun race accompanied by the Eton College CCF military band including the pipes and drums. The evening concludes with a small-scale battle scene.

Though the CCF is not designed to recruit for the armed forces, a significant number of boys do nevertheless take up commissions. For example, an average of six Old Etonians attend Royal Military Academy Sandhurst annually, with five OEs due to commence training at RMAS at the beginning of 2013.  The Army is the biggest single employer of OEs.

There are a wide range of summer camps which boys are expected to attend. Some camps are abroad (to Germany or Cyprus, for example); others are organised through Army contacts in the UK and concentrate on specialised military skills and adventurous training.

In 2010, Her Majesty the Queen visited Eton to inspect the Corps on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, and unveiled a plaque commemorating those Old Etonians awarded the Victoria Cross and George Cross. – https://www.etoncollege.com/CCF.aspx

Headshot and Corporate Photography with Rhubarb & Custard

Posted on 3 June 2019 by Admin under Uncategorized

We offer Corporate Photography for Businesses, Companies and Brands

The importance of good quality photography is crucial to any business and any brand (including yourself!) and can alter the way it is perceived by customers to an astonishing level. Decisions such as the the choice of backdrop, the creative use of light, both natural and artificial, and the subtle yet important decision of camera angle can make or break a photo.

With over 10 years of experience in Corporate branding, our owner and photographer, Halid Izzet will be able to guide you through the decision process, taking an ‘end customer” approach to his work. Best results are always done in partnership between the photographer and client and its very rare to have a photographer who is so ‘brand aware’.

Halid worked as Brand Manager and then International Marketing Manager for a portfolio of Whiskies for Allied Domecq, in the Czech republic, France and the USA. The world of Whiskies is a particularly good training ground for Brand Marketing as customer perception is of paramount importance with each product having heavy emotional (as opposed to functional) expectations and functions to fulfil.

Halid is now able to use his training and expertise to get the most out of you and your brand by saving you money, being  ‘Creative Agency” and photographer in one.

Branding

What does aligning with your brand mean? Whether we’re talking about your personal or professional brand, your professional headshot should be representative of the visual style and persona you want to reflect. For example, if you work for a professional services firm who maintains business professional attire, your attire and headshot location should match that. Whether your headshot location is in-studio or on-location, it’s important to keep the background selection in mind.

Put your staff in their best light

Corporate portraits are the best way to portray the image of your company and employees. Having no photos on your site will make it look bland and lack identity. But what’s even worse is a site with bad pictures of your employees, this could be catastrophic for your reputation.

To avoid these problems, put yourself in the customer’s shoes. Do your employees make you want to work there? To get these attractive, high quality photos, hire a professional photographer, this will help you give the right impression of your company.

Little trick: make a list of your company’s values and give them to the photographer so they can convey this through the pictures. Doing this will help the photographer define parameters such as your body language, what to wear, lighting and expression.

The Procession of Boats

Posted on 29 May 2019 by Admin under Photography for Eton College

The Annual Fourth of June Eton College Procession of Boats, River Thames, Windsor, Berkshire. Taken by Rhubarb & Custard Photography.

Eton has a long standing tradition since the 1780’s that started informally when the boys made their own amusements. Dressed in uniforms dating from Nelson’s time, boys row in wooden clinker-built eights, and one ten, along the Thames passed Windsor Castle. They then lift the oars out of the water and stand upright behind them rendering the boat wholly unstable and top heavy, not always with great success.

The wooden boats are clinker, fixed seat, and most have fixed pin (as opposed to swivel) rowlocks. The blades have ‘needle’ spoons and the leading boat is a ten-oar. All the rowers are dressed in the uniform of eighteenth-century midshipmen, with the cox dressed as an admiral or other senior naval officer of Nelson’s era.

Most strikingly, the oarsmen wear straw boaters that have been extravagantly decorated with fresh flowers by their house matrons or ‘Dames’. The uniforms of the senior crews can be viewed on the website ‘Eton Colours’.

There are two notable dates for Eton boys and their families during the year. There is St Andrew’s Day, for which the main attraction is the impenetrable ‘Wall Game’, and ‘The Fourth of June’ (which is rarely held on 4 June). This is the birthday of Eton’s greatest patron, King George III (1738-1820), and is the school’s equivalent of parents’ day or open day. The entertainments include a wide range of exhibitions, a promenade concert, a performance of speeches, a cricket match against Old Etonians, and the Procession of Boats. The Procession is a ‘row past’ by most of the school’s boat club in front of the parents and the teachers assembled in one of the school fields that rolls down to the Thames. It starts with the most senior boys’ boats and ends with those of the youngest.

At a certain point in the row past, each boat in turn stops and the entire crew and the cox stand up. Those in boats with open fixed pin gates hold their oars erect. While Victorian eights are a little more stable than are modern racing boats, this is still a difficult thing to do. They then face Windsor Castle, remove their hats and cheer the Queen, the school, and the memory of George III, shaking the flowers from their boaters into the water. The crew then resume their seats and row away.

The first boat to stand and salute the School and Her Majesty the Queen is Monarch, the ten-oar. It is usually stroked by the Captain of the Boats and crewed by senior boys who help administer internal rowing.

Boats, which are now racing boats – clinker-built wooden ones – bear famous names from the Napoleonic War era like Thetis and Hibernia and Dreadnought.

There was even a boat called The Monarch, and that is unique. It has ten oarsmen and a cox. There is no other ten-oared boat that we know of in the world.

As part of our commitment to Eton College, we regularly attend sports matches and competitions. We also try to be there for special days such as the Fourth Of June, Procession of boats, St Andrews Day, Mufti Day and so on.

We are also asked to photograph most of the House and School Plays which are also available to view on our website after each event.

HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR GROUP PHOTOS?

The place that you have your group stand is important to group shots for a number of reasons. For starters it can give the photo context – for example a shot of a sporting team on their playing field means more than a shot of them in front of a brick wall. The other reason that choosing locations carefully is important is that it can have distractions in it.

Each House photo will be taken outside their House itself, in the area or on the famous courtyard to mark where the boys spend most of their time.

As our studio is only a 3 minute walk away from Eton College, you can be assured that we are always on time or will arrive early to give us the opportunity to prepare and set up.

We have professional equipment we use to set up the group photos safely and securely. We use a mixture of both chairs and staging platforms to stagger the boys.

If you would like your house included this year, we would love to hear from you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q – How long do I have to commit for ?
A –
“My Eton Days” subscriptions are renewed at the beginning of each academic year. You only commit to one year at a time (that’s 3 photoshoots) and can take the option of not renewing at the end of each academic year.

Q – Do I have to buy any prints or files during the subscription ?
A –
No; There is no requirement at all for you to purchase anything during the course of your subscription. However we do have all manner of prints, framed photos, photo books, acrylic wall frames, cut outs and so on, during your subscription. Please also note that the cost of your subscription does not include the cost of a final photobook as these are all priced invividually, based on the number of pages and size of the books themselves. Please contact us for details of our our current heirloom photobooks and prices.

Q – Do you literally follow my son around the college grounds – he would find this embarrasing!
A-
Absolutely not ! The last thing we want is to embarrass your son, with a lens fixed on him all the time, so all our shoots are arranged at discrete times, when other students aren’t around. They are all pre-arranged with your son at a time that’s convenient for him and are for a maximum of one hour at a time ( & often less).

Q – Will it interfere with his studies ?
A –
Not at all – We have a very flexible agenda and are able to fit shoots in at most times of the day. Furthermore, some shoots, such as a football or rugby match,  don’t even involve any extra time from him as we’ll just be on the touchline while he’s playing. Although we allow an hour for each shoot, most actually just take between 15 and 45 minutes (Housemasters and dames for example wouldn’t want to have a shoot with them that takes longer than 15 minutes or so).

Q – Do I need to organise all the shoots for him?
A –
We do all the organisation for you. We would normally E-mail your son directly, cc’ing in the Dame and yourself, so that everyone is kept informed every step of the way.

If you have any questions about the above options, we would be more than happy to discuss them with you. We look forward to hearing from you!
